Lifting
Definition
Lifting is a work / task, where a load / item is lifted / raised at required height to shift / manage load / item from one place to another with the help of cranes, may be of various types in factory / warehouse or any industry / organization.
Types of Lifting
There are three types of lifting:
Simple lifting – less than 20 tones.
Heavy lifting – more that 20 tones.
Critical lifting – where, lifting carried out by crane capacity above 80% of SWL. Under Critical lifting, some liftings are also covers which are as follows:
i) Tandem lift – using 2 cranes for lifting.
ii) Lifting over live facilities.
Safety measures are laid down in Section 29 of Chapter IV of Factory Act 1948. Cranes, Forklift, Pulley and Lynches are Lifting Machines. Wire ropes, Slings and chains are Lifting Tackles.
In any factory the following provisions shall be complied with in respect of every machine other than a Hoist and Lift and every chain, rope and lifting tackles for the purpose of raising or lowering persons, goods and materials.
a. All parts including the working gear, whether fixed or movable of every lifting machine and every chain, rope or lifting tackle shall be:
i) Of good construction, sound materials and adequate strength and free from defects.
ii) Properly maintained.
iii) Thoroughly examined by a competent person at least once in 12 months.
b. Lifting machines such as cranes, devices and hoist coupling may be cause of accident due to manufacture/mechanical failure, or unsafe operating procedure.
i) Frequent periodic inspection and maintenance of such parts as chain, wire rope, gears, cluster, brakes, bearings, etc. sub rate to wear and tear.
ii) Standard signals should be implemented so that the operator and the user would be able to synchronize their communication.
