Ladders

 Definition

An equipment uses to access height and used in construction works is called ladder.

 

Types of Ladders:

  1. Straight and Fixed ladder – 9 meters.
  2. Step ladder – 2 meters.
  3. Extension ladder – 15 meters.
  4. Foot ladder or safe walk ladder.

 

 

Precaution in usage of ladders

  1. Construction of ladder should undergo as per the safety rules.
  2. Ladders should be strong and made up of sound materials.
  3. The interval between rungs shall be equal. Not less than 26 cm or more than 35 cm.
  4. Ladders should be inspected at regular intervals.
  5. Ladders should be stored properly when not in use.
  6. Wooden ladders should not be painted but could be coated with protective materials.
  7. Ladder with broken or cracked rungs should never be used.
  8. Any ladder found defective in any way should be marked “DO NOT USE”.
  9. Always check the ladder and see that no grease or oil on the rungs or rails.
  10. Care should be taken while carrying the ladder. Especially at the doorways and around corners to avoid injuries to other persons.
  11. Ladder shall raise at least 1 meter about the highest point to be reached by any person using ladder.
  12. Every ladder shall be securely fixed, so that it cannot move from its top and bottom points of rest.
  13. Ladders shall not stand on loose bricks or other loose packing should have a level and firm footing.
  14. When placing a ladder, it should have an angle of 75 degree formed horizontal.
  15. The ratio of erection while raising the ladder must be 1:4 (gap between building and foot of ladder & length of ladder).
  16. When climbing a ladder, the worker should not carry any tools in his hand and should carry a shoulder bag.
  17. The worker should climb or get down a ladder by facing the same and both hands to grip the rail or rungs.
  18. Ladder shall not be lashed together to gain extra height.
  19. Metals ladders shall be protected against corrosion by being coated with rust proof paint.
  20. Extension ladders shall be equipped with an effective lock and guide brackets.
