Definition

House Keeping means not only cleanliness but also orderly arrangement of operation tools, equipment, storage facilities and supplies. It is a practice method of increasing production and reducing accident and improving employee’s morale.

 

 

5 “S” method

5’S’ was derived from Japanese word which are as follows:

 

  1. Seiri (sort):  It means eliminating any thing that is unnecessary.
  2. Seiton (straighten): It works on the principle “A place for everything and everything in its place”.
  3. Seisou (Shining): It means keep everything so clean that it shines.
  4. Seiketsu (Standardizing): It means respecting the previous 3’s. Maintaining high standards of House Keeping and workplace at all times.
  5. Shitsuke (sustain): Create a culture where in all the members practice the above 4’s as a way of life.

Measures to improve House Keeping

  • Proper layout of work area.
  • Marking of aisles and segregating storage area.
  • Cabinets and holders for tools and equipment.
  • Storage arrangement for materials.
  • Containers for material in process.
  • Proper storage and sacking of materials: it should not be piled up. 
  • Grease, oil spills on floor should be cleaned immediately.
  • Nails, planks with producing nails and other sharp cutting should not be left on the floors.
  • Eliminate the practice of keeping excess materials at the work spot.
  • Proper disposal of waste should be managed by using scrap bins dustbins.
  • Proper storage and stacking of materials it should not be piled up.
  • Uniform color-coding should be applied for pipeline for carrying gas, water, air-steam.
  • Good ventilation and hygiene condition should be maintained in the whole work environment.
  • Uniform combination of natural and artificial ventilation should be adequately maintained.
  • All defective tools should be removed from tools box.
  • All moving machine parts and line electric lines should be guarded.
  • All manholes must be closed / barricaded with suitable cover. It opened a red flag in the day and red light in the night should be placed.
  • A first aid box shall be provided in a
    suitable place in each department used its contents should be checked frequently.
  • Combustible and explosive should be stored away from the area.
  • Fire extinguisher should be provided at all hazardous area. These should be checked periodically.
  • A definite schedule to carryout House Keeping inspections should be developed.
