Chain Pulley / Blocks
Definition
Chain Pulley / block is a mechanical device or a lifting tool, used to lift and lower heavy loads, objects and equipment. It consists of a pulley, chain / wire rope / cable / belt which drives the element/load over the wheel. At one end of the rope, the load / object is loaded and from the other end the rope is pulled down the object lifts. To life large objects an assembly of pulleys are used.
A chain block moves a load by pulling a chain is also known as chain hoist. It is widely used in industries such as production, manufacturing, mining, building, etc. Pulley should be used to lift the materials and transfer the material in short distance.
Safety Precautions:
- SWL should be stamped on pulleys.
- In any case pulley meant for fiber should be used with steel rope.
- Shaft, hook, hose pin, locking pin, chain shall be checked before use.
- Grooves of sheaves should be uniform and smooth.
- Quality, size, capacity of the pulley should be ensured before use.
- Pins and hooks should not be worn out.
- Anchoring should be strong and firm for which load calculations must be made.
- They should be examined periodically by competent person and record to be maintained as per Factory Act 1948 before use.
- After completion of the work, the chain pulley should be kept in store with a tag.
- Anchoring should be strong than the lifting capacity of the pulley.
