CPCB Central Pollution Control Board

Introduction

      The Central Pollution Control Board is a statutory part of India which works under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Board was established on 22 September 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. This board consists of a chairperson who is appointed by the Appointees Committee of the Cabinets. At present, the chairperson of this division is Mr. Shiv Das Meena and member secretary is Dr. Prashant Gargava.       Its job is to provide field and technical services to the Ministry of Environment whose articles are contained in the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

      The Central Pollution Control Board has its headquarters at New Delhi and has 7 zonal offices and 05 laboratories. The Board also conducts environmental assessment and environmental experiments, and the Board takes responsibility for environmental legislation which takes responsibility for national standards. The Central Pollution Control Board also monitors the maintenance of water and air information and related information.

      Central Pollution Control Board has 07 zonal offices at Bengaluru, Kolkata, Shillong, Bhopal, Lucknow, Vadodara and one project office at Agra.

Functions of CPCB (at national levels)

1. Advise the Central Govt. on any mater concerning prevention and control of water pollution and air pollution.
2. Plan and execute nation-wide pollution control programs.
3. Co-ordinate the activities of State Boards and Pollution Control Committees (PCCs).
4. Provide technical assistance and guidance to the State Boards and PCCs.
5. Carryout and sponsor investigation and research related to pollution control.
6. Plan and organize training programs.
7. Organize mass awareness programs.
8. Collect, compile and publish technical and statistical data relating to water pollution and air pollution.
9. Prepare manuals, codes and guidelines relating to treatment and disposal of wastes.
10. Disseminate information in respect of matters relating to water and air pollution.
11. Lay down and modify, water and air quality standards.
12. Perform such other functions as and when prescribed by the Govt. of India.
